Hi all,

In My Movies for Windows 5.13 Pre Release 5, we have added a DLNA server to the software package.

The DLNA server can be used from many different devices, including, but not limited to Xbox 360, Xbox One, Playstation 3, Playstation 4, Popcorn Hour, Open Hour, WDTV and many different Smart Tv's.

The intention with a My Movies DLNA server is to service directly supported files - all devices should support MP4/M4V files, and some devices also supports MKV files - these are both formats that can be created with the My Movies video converter.

Overall, DLNA is a streaming solution, but there are two different ways of handling this - either directly serving files directly, allowing them to play in their native format, or doing on-the-fly conversion of the files to a format supported by the DLNA server. The My Movies DLNA solution is for quality, stability and reliability reasons created to serve files directly only - on-the-fly transcoding is from our perspective not ideal, as it puts pressure on the serving device, and, this and transcoding problems can cause instability.

The intention is that our users use the video converter to convert to formats supported by their DLNA device(s).

We have reviewed on the following devices:

Xbox 360 (MP4/M4V)
Xbox One (MP4/M4V/MKV)
Playstation 3 (MP4/M4V)
Samsung TV (MP4/M4V - other models may support MKV)
Popcorn Hour (MP4/M4V/MKV)
OpenHour (MP4/M4V/MKV)
WDTV Live (MP4/M4V/MKV)

We would love to hear some feedback from you, especially, we are interested in hearing from users of:

Oppo
Playstation 4
LG Smart TV
Panasonic Smart TV

What we specifically would like feedback on is:

- Can you browse the DLNA server folders?
- Do you have images on your media?
- Can you play MP4/M4V files?
- Are MKV files displayed, perhaps how? (eg. Playstation 3 shows as unsupported media).
- Can you play MKV files?

Let us hear what you find.

Best regards,

Brian Binnerup

I installed this build on my Windows Server Essentials 2012 machine and the DLNA server is enabled, but none of my network devices see it. I tried a few Android apps and also look in NETWORK on my Win 8 PCs - it's not listed there at all. Is there some extra level of config needed? Some firewall settings me maybe? Conversely, I later installed PLEX on the same server and all my client devices see that just fine - no extra config or ports open.

It should be available just like that - would be interesting if you attach a log, so that we can see if it perhaps starts on wrong IP.

Delete log, reboot the machine and post a the log.

Hi Brian,

I have a Panasonic SmartTV. Overall, it works ok except:
- I get a server connection timeout when listing all movie titles. I have a long list and have the problem with Plex also.
- The alphabetical movie list is unsorted.

- Can you browse the DLNA server folders? Yes
- Do you have images on your media? Yes
- Can you play MP4/M4V files? No, they do play via the Plex DLNA server, but I dont know if it transcoded...
- Are MKV files displayed, perhaps how? (eg. Playstation 3 shows as unsupported media). Yes, but not all, also in Plex
- Can you play MKV files? Yes

I also tried Windows Media Player but it does not list e.g. the genres with the error message: The remote media library did not allow the connection. Even when I try connecting with WMP from the same machine MyMovies is installed on.

On Android with the Mediahouse BubbleUPnP Media Server I also get the unsorted alpha list. The all titles list only shows 120 entries. Not sure if this a limitation from Mediahouse. The search function does not return anything.

Is it possible to also include Filters in the DLNA menu?

Best regards,

Thomas

tazman: Thank you for your feedback.

- Regarding the connection timeout, there is a chance it is due to processing time on the server. Can you post a log for me to look at?
- Can you take a photo of how the alfabetic list looks? Sounds odd that it would not be sorted, as items are sent out in order.

- Regarding your MP4/M4V files that does not play. Can you try to post a log? I would love to see if it tries to query a correct file? (Clear log before querying).
- MKV files that are not listed, if you edit the title in Collection Management, and press save, try to post a log of that. It shows me the media info reading.
- I also would like a log of the query of genres, as it could be server issue, but also a chance it is a character that disturbs WMP.

We do not have a search function implemented.

Filters is likely to be added, yes.

Hi Brian,

I have attached the log files and some pictures for the different scenarios.

I have verified that the MP4 file plays properly on the TV from an USB stick.

I think I misunderstood your "are MKV files displayed" question. From what I could see they dislay, just dont play all the time.

Now for something really strange. All tests were run from a new i3 Intel NUC with Windows 8.1, 4GB named "MPC" that is directly connected to the TV and hosts the MyMovies database. This is where All Titles fails. See "log List All Titles - Connection failed - Direct.txt" and the corresponding screenshot.

On my desktop computer, an older Quadcore with 8GB name "DESKTOP" I have a MyMovies client running that connects to the databae on MPC. This one also extends a MM DLNA server. When I am calling "All Titles" there it works. See log "log List ALl Titles - Connection worked - from other PC.txt". Both computers are connected via LAN cable but DESKTOP is closer to the storage server. Maybe that makes a difference.

Best regards,

Thomas

I've removed the content of this post because it was not relevant to this topic (as noted by Brian below).

In relation to the problems tazman reports on all titles queries, we have tried to look at performance, and it indeed takes some time to build the XML.

We have for the past days tried working on getting the database to generate it directly - it is technically complicated, but MUCH faster.

So, there will be a little silent on looking at other things until this is done.

I have been trying this on a Philips 50000 series TV, which according to the specs. does support MP4 and MKV. I can see the DNLA server and navigate to the MyMovies directory/folders but when I select anything to play I get "Unsupported File" for both file types. Any suggestions or has anyone used this sucessfully with a Philips TV?

Try to post a log, so that we can check that it queries the correct file.

It would not be uncommon that some devices does not work at all - we had the same thing with the Samsung we tried, where it required some specific information in the stream.

For what it's worth here are my findings...

I used the mymovies video converter to convert the Avatar dvd into "Avatar.m4v" (using profile 10.). I had the converter place the file in a share called "dvds stream".

Since it was clear that this file needed to be identified in the mymovies library I added a new "disc" to the existing source entry and called it "stream". I pointed this "disc" at the "\dvds stream\avatar.m4v" file.

(I did try using the mymovies monitor function to add it, but that just seemed to confused things. Something to be investigated at another time).

Using a Sony TV (KDL-22EX320) I then browsed the mymovies dlna service that the TV found. Actually the TV found a dnla service presented by not only the server, but also all my mymovie Windows clients as well (is it supposed to??)!. So I chose the server based service.

At this point to should note that my mymovies library also contains three .mp4 based movies. So with this configuration the answer to your questions are:

- Can you browse the DLNA server folders? - Yes
- Do you have images on your media? - No
- Can you play MP4/M4V files? - Yes for the mp4 movies. No to the .m4v movies (which actually didn't appear on the list)
- Are MKV files displayed, perhaps how? (eg. Playstation 3 shows as unsupported media). - No .mkvs to test
- Can you play MKV files? - don't know (see previous answer)

Since the .mp4 movies were displayed and could be played, I tried renaming the avatar.m4v file to avatar.mp4 and editing the "disc" entry to suite. Then the answers became:

- Can you browse the DLNA server folders? - Yes
- Do you have images on your media? - Yes for the renamed .m4v file, but No for the .mp4 movies.
- Can you play MP4/M4V files? - Yes for the mp4 and the renamed .m4v movies.
- Are MKV files displayed, perhaps how? (eg. Playstation 3 shows as unsupported media). - No .mkvs to test
- Can you play MKV files? - don't know (see previous answer)

Interestingly, the rename .m4v file appeared 3 times as: "Avatar [Avatar]" (with no image), "Avatar [stream]" (with no image), "Avatar" (with image). All three played exactly the same.

To see how Windows Media Player worked I pointed it's Video Library at the "dvds stream" share and turned on stream support. I changed "Avatar.mp4" back to "Avatar.m4v". When browsing the Windows dnla service on the TV the answers became:

- Can you browse the DLNA server folders? - Yes
- Do you have images on your media? - Yes
- Can you play MP4/M4V files? - Yes
- Are MKV files displayed, perhaps how? (eg. Playstation 3 shows as unsupported media). - No .mkvs to test
- Can you play MKV files? - don't know (see previous answer)

I guess this indicates that the tv can handle a dnla service appropriately.

I can attach a log, but I am not sure which (of the many) is appropriate.

Cheers, Jim

I am sorry, I did not get to check this.

There are no requests for the actual file in the log.

Can you from the final 5.13 version try to clear the log, browse the DNLA server to the title, and then try to start playback, and post that log?

Then I know I have exactly what should be in there.
